Based in Sector 4, the Old Factory layer is the dark and horrid remnants of the old factories from the Factory Era, buried under the New Factory layer. The Old Factory layer is home to 'subfactorans', who are pale, hunchback workers who grew up knowing that they had to work in the factory, and nothing else.

The old factories were slightly re-purposed in order to keep workers in, effectively trapping all the workers underground. The workers are sent enough rations and resources each day to stay alive, and are given facilities to deal with every day cleaning and sleeping, but are rarely if ever monitored nor supervised. The re-purposing separated the workers into communities of 100-200 people, and if overpopulation ever becomes a problem, workers are encouraged to make a sacrifice for the greater good. Dead workers are placed in a box that gets sent to an incinerator.

Communities are refereed to as their designation, a letter followed by numbers. Each letter represents a different step in the production chain. These are as follows:

  • R - Refining
  • M - Manufacturing
  • P - Packaging

Due to the nature of these work environments, some communities have become deranged, started cults, or generally go off course. The managers who do the little monitoring of the factories only see the factories outputs, so as long as the deranged communities are producing goods, anything goes.

Notable Communities

R-36264

The community under the designation R-36264 is notable for it's use of violent communication among it's people. For some unknown reason, the pens and pencils used to write the work orders for the day had stopped appearing in the monthly supply packs. The lead manager of the community became stressed, as not once has a work order been missed. The manager decided to use his blood to re-fill the ink in the used pens. What started as a last-ditch effort to keep production going smoothly, quickly turned on it's head. After the first few months of using the blood from his arm to fill empty pens, the manager became crazed, and started writing straight from his bloodied fingers instead of funneling the blood into a pen, eventually the manager communicated in blood only, and didn't respond to anything spoken to him. The community had started to take notice, and as to not displease the manager and disrupt production, started going along with the idea of using blood to communicate. After a few generations had passes, the idea of spoken language was no more, and instead, people communicated by bloodying themselves and writing wherever they could. Eventually, the places a citizen would be able to communicate would be dried over blood. Due to this new, barbaric way of communication, the average life span of the citizens of R-36264 has shortened to 20-25 years.
